The Garden

Other areas of the garden provide the drier conditions loved by plants like Geraniums and the sun loving Salvias; a large collection includes many tender species from Central America.

We have created an area to provide a suitable habitat for a collection of woodland plants.

Every day of the year there is a Clematis in flower somewhere in the garden not surprising with over 200 different varieties and species clothing every available support.

Having sculpture around the garden and in the meadows is very important to us and we are always adding to our collection.

Our garden maybe small, measuring just over quarter of an acre but it is jam packed with plants, leaving no space for any weeds.

With over 2,000 mainly herbaceous perennials from all over the world; all nurtured in accordance with organic principles.

A large bog garden contains a collection of over 80 water loving Irises and many other plants that relish the damp conditions, such as Primulas, Lobelias and Trollius.

For many years we did all the work in the garden ourselves, but recently we have employed people to help, especially over the winter, which is our busiest time for the heavy jobs : starting in October, when we cut the meadows, cutting and clearing all the perennials, spreading compost and turning the compost from bin 1 to bin 2, with the last job before we open, re-making the bark paths in April. Judith still does all the planting.

While the garden is open, Marc, from Garden Plus, comes in once a week to cut the grass.
